Inside: Life Behind Bars in America American jails and prisons confine nearly 13.5 million people each year. Despite these disturbing numbers, little is known about life inside beyond the mythology of popular culture. Michael G. Santos, a federal prisoner nearing the end of his second decade of continuous confinement, documents the lives of the men warehoused in the American prison system. Inside: Life Behind Bars in America, his first book for the general public, takes us behind those bars and into the chaos of the cellblock. Capturing the voices of his fellow prisoners with perfect pitch, Santos makes the tragic--and at times inspiring--stories of men from the toughest gang leaders to the richest Wall Street criminals come alive. From drug schemes, murders for hire, and even a prostitution ring that trades on the flesh of female prison guards, this book contains the never-before-seen details of prison life that at last illuminate the varied ways in which men experience life behind bars in America. (14) hanging on I reported last friday about the Blue Tits Dick and Dixie who are raising their family in a bird house in our yard. Since the little ones were peeking out of the hole it looked like they were ready to leave home, eventhough they looked too small to my taste. Just in case one would fall out I'd mounted a bucket right under the bird house as a safety net. Yesterday morning while Paul and I were having coffee in the garden one of the babies jumped out, fluttered a little and landed in a bush. It couldn't fly yet and it was not big enough to withstand the dangers of the big world, so we decided to interfere and put it back, thinking it was a mistake of the wee one. All looked well, Dick and Dixie continued to feed their chicks and we went on with the day. This morning after a rough night with rain and thunder I went outside to check on the new family. I saw Dick and Dixie hovering around, but they weren't feeding their chicks anymore. It was awefully quiet in the nest too so after waiting for a couple of hours and watching the behaviour of the parents I decided to take a look inside the bird house. Would they all have left early in the morning? When I opened the bird house much to my horror I discovered that five of the chicks were dead, but one was still living and sat motionless on top his brothers and sisters. The nest was dirty and wet, flies everywhere and smelled aweful. At first I thought that the rain must have gotten in (eventhough the bird house is in a sheltered location) the dead chicks looked wet and may have died from the cold, but the bucket that was mounted right under the bird house was still dry and even more exposed. I don't know what happened, maybe the parents couldn't keep the nest clean with so many babies so they got sick and died? I lifted the little one out and put it in the bucket for a moment while I cleaned the bird house and lined it with fresh hay (and buried his/her siblings:-(, after putting the chick back in the nest I hung it on the wall again and waited for the parents to return. CHRIS DEFRIES TAKES ON THE CHALLENGE The 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center has four wards and each has a cat/dog door leading out to the Day Room. Day Rooms are enclosed areas about 60 feet long and 20 feet wide and 12 feet high to get sunshine and fresh air and play and have fun. When the wind blows hard the doors can stand straight open letting in the cold or hot air and sometimes even the rain or snow into the 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center. The challenge has been out for over a year to build some kind of entry system that prevents the weather getting in BUT ... allows easy access for all animals, including the handicapped, three legged, blind, etc. ... allows easy access for medical personnel to remove the animal (feral cat) that is hiding to avoid treatment without injury (to the human or to the animal but that's never the case). ... to be sturdy so repairs aren't constantly needed and it doesn't blow over in the wind and ... ... to be easy to keep clean - yes naughty little kitties and blind poodles do things in places they shouldn't. Chris designed outdoor wind tunnels. That was the first question to answer. Inside or outside. Inside would be easier to build but everything else would be harder with inside tunnels. These tunnels have three baffles inside and strips of plastic hanging down on the final exit port as an additional wind break. They attach on hinges to the roof section over the doors and can be unlatched and swung down to extricate a medicine avoiding animal or for cleaning. It is an ingenious design.
